Welcome to the Township of Manitouwadge’s Community Engagement Hub for the Recreation, Parks and Facilities Master Plan project!
The Township of Manitouwadge is undertaking a Recreation, Parks and Facilities Master Plan study to guide the delivery of recreation, parks, and facility services over the next 10 years and beyond. Recreation is a cornerstone in the Manitouwadge community for its contribution to quality of life and to the sustainability of the Township, with a substantial variety of recreation opportunities for residents and visitors alike.
Your input is a critical part of this process!
The ultimate goal of this initiative will be to support economic sustainability and community wellbeing for years to come in the Township of Manitouwadge. We need to work together to create an informed plan for a recreation, parks and facilities plan that will serve and better the community.
You know your town better than anyone. Ask questions, share your ideas, speak your mind! If you would like to provide comments via email, you can email a team member directly.
Please see the Interim Report (under 'documents' in the right hand panel) to read up on what we have learned so far about recreation in the Township, and participate in the survey below!
Please use the tools below to get involved and share your thoughts.
The survey is now closed, as of February 4th, 2021. Thank you to everyone who submitted a response!

Upon our initial inventory and analysis of the existing recreation, parks and facilities we have compiled a short list of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and constraints. Feel free to share your own ideas in the "Your Ideas" Tab!
Strengths
Township has a wide variety of recreation facilities
Kiwissa Ski Hill and Skateboard Park are good quality facilities that are popular with residents and attract visitors from outside Manitouwadge.
Access to surrounding wilderness for hunting, camping, ATV/snowmobiling
Access to waterfront (beach, boat launch etc.)
Trails Master Plan will provide guidance for improving trails, connectivity to other sites (e.g. other municipalities, waterfalls etc.), and in turn support recreation for residents and tourists
Engaged and active community
Good attendance at community events
Weaknesses
Most recreation facilities in need of significant upgrades (not AODA accessible, inefficient, aged and in need of repair, some of which are required to continue operations.
Policies and by-laws related to recreation are limited and largely outdated
Challenges to recreation-related tourism: distance off highway, poor winter maintenance on highway in winter to facilitate access for winter visitors.
Limited tax base
Small population detracts from program viability (i.e., few children, adults leave for extended work periods)
Heavy reliance on a core group of volunteers
Opportunities
The Township has the facility base to support recreation tourism, which is a current focus for economic development and future sustainability
Complementing and expanding on recommendations/initiatives that arise from the Trails Master Plan and Community Revitalization Plan
Attracting new residents who are able to work from home
Unused land/vacant buildings available (e.g. Caddy’s building by waterfront, old beach/campground)
Constraints
Aging population
Outmigration of youth
Facilities are underused
Volunteer burnout
Difficulty attracting industry/commerce due to remote location and small population
Reliance on non-local contractors for facility repairs/upgrades results in cost premiums for almost all infrastructure projects.
